Description
Periodontal disease is the most common dental disease, often referred to as gum disease. It is caused by bacteria that form a sticky film called plaque on teeth. This leads to inflammation of the gums and bone loss around the affected teeth, which can result in tooth loss if left untreated.
Once a patient sees our aurora dentist for this condition, the dentist will begin treatment to reduce inflammation and prevent further bone loss. This can be achieved through some different methods, including:
· Scaling and root planing
· Application of antimicrobial agents
· Apical surgery
· Suturing of the gingiva
· Removal of diseased tissue surrounding teeth
In St Andrew's Dental Care, we offer non-surgical therapy or recommend surgery depending on the severity of the condition. Non-surgical treatment typically consists of scaling to reduce plaque and tartar buildup, followed by root planing to smooth the root surface and remove any bacterial deposits. In some cases, antimicrobial agents may be used in conjunction with these procedures to reduce swelling and kill bacteria that remain present.
